LANAP

Dr. Griselle Ortiz-Ramsey is the first dentist and board-certified periodontist in the Dayton - Miami Valley area to be trained and licensed by the Institute for Advanced Laser Dentistry to perform LANAP. She is also one of a few dentists in the State of Ohio to be licensed to perform this procedure. This amazing breakthrough procedure offers significantly-improved results in less time and with minimal discomfort - and you get to keep your smile!

What is LANAP?

LANAP is an abbreviation for laser assisted new attachment procedure. LANAP is a patented protocol developed by Dr. Robert Gregg and Dr. Delwin McCarthy two practicing dentists in Cerritos California after decades of research in the use of laser energy in the treatment of periodontal disease and is the only FDA-approved laser for the treatment of gum disease.

What is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal diseases are infections of the gums that slowly destroy the support of your natural teeth. Dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease. Bacteria found in plaque produce toxins or poisons that irritate the gums. They may cause them to turn red, swell, and bleed easily. Bleeding of the gums is not normal, just imagine your hands bleeding each time you wash them. Why do some people ignore their gums bleeding when they brush and floss? If this irritation is prolonged, the gums separate from the teeth causing pockets (spaces) to form. When plaque hardens it is known as calculus (or tartar) and can occur both above and below the gum line. As periodontal diseases progress, the supporting gum tissue and bone that holds teeth in place deteriorate. If left untreated, this leads to tooth loss. However don't be fooled with periodontal disease because bleeding, redness, and swelling of the gums do not have to be present, especially if you are smoker. Also surprisingly, pain is usually not associated with periodontal disease which leads to the problem being ignored which results in preventable tooth loss. This disease damages the teeth, gum, and jawbone of more than 80 percent of Americans by age 45.

When to see a Periodontist

If you have been experiencing symptoms of periodontal disease, including red, swollen or tender gums or other pain in your mouth, bleeding while brushing your teeth, persistent bad breath, or a change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite, it may be a good idea to schedule an appointment with a periodontist. Also, several research studies have found a relationship between periodontal disease and other serious health problems such as heart disease, diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis.

What is a Periodontist?

A periodontist is a dentist who specializes in the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of periodontal disease and other procedures involving the gums and bone around the teeth, such as the placement of dental implants. Periodontists are also dentistry's experts in the treatment of oral inflammation. Periodontists receive extensive training in these areas, including three additional years of education beyond dental school. The extra education and wide ranging experience treating gum disease and inflammation assures that you are receiving the best possible care. Periodontists are also familiar with the latest techniques for diagnosing and treating periodontal disease.
